could you elaborate on what this would mean?
When you log in for the first time, the app presents zap options for 500, 1000 and 5000 SATs. Those are the default zaps. In the next version, this default behavior will be private as opposed to public.
In private zaps, the author of a zap is not known, the message is encrypted.
So the event is private but the other user does see who it's from? How far off am I?
Sender and receiver see each other. Everybody else just the encrypted content
I think this would be interesting to have. do you think it would subtract from the social aspect of zapping?

seeing the zaps on other's posts let's you know the types of content people like. additionally, from a users perspective, zaps are already pseudo anonymous since I can't tell who zapped 5k on a specific post ya know

It's nice to be public by default imo because if it's going to replace likes in the long run, it will need something that somewhat resembles the function.
What you could do though, is when you first tap the zap button, you set your default settings then.
What I'd love is to be able to long press on the user's LNURL address & copy it. I can then paste it into the wallet I use for larger payments & create my own message/anonymous zap.
Right now I'm forced to type it out or use the built in zap & top up my Alby wallet.
For smaller automated zaps, I'm ok with them being public.
Larger/custom zaps don't need to be associated with a note or npub.
Someone incorrectly expecting zaps to be private by default (when they are not) is harmed more than someone incorrectly expecting zaps to be public by default (when they are not). But it does feel weird for someone to expect they're private by default.
Yes, maybe with a toggle or checkbox above the zap amounts when you zap so it's very obvious which you are doing.

can the creator of the poll define the maximum sats for voting?
for example, place a 1 sat cap. that way, each sat represented a vote from a certain wallet
or maybe display the number of different pubkeys that voted. that'd be better, and the zapping cap could be removed

It's settled then... All zaps in Amethyst will be private by default. You can switch to public in the zap options page together with the amounts.
