Californians don't dress like 1840s gold miners. Virginians don't wear

powdered wigs like their ancestors. Floridians don't dress like

Conquistadors. So why do Texans dress like cowboys?

It's not a costume. Many Texans still work with cows and on farms. The boots protect against rattlesnakes, the hat against the sun (both in the eyes and facial burns), tighter jeans to prevent being caught on barb wire, etc. It's more function over fashion.
