It's just some nice addition to the protocol. You can send value back to someone that provided something valuable to you.
Maybe a note made you laugh, maybe someone posts useful information, I don't know, many things that turn out to be valuable to you. With zaps you can send some satoshis (real money, Bitcoin) to that person, instantly.
