After further research, I'm not so sure about this. Seems like there is no cheap unit worth buying just for testing. The amount of time I'm expected to waste researching what device to buy is not a good sign for how much of a waste of time the whole #meshtastic project would be to get into.

MURS walkie talkies are plenty cheap enough to be a better investment instead of wasting time on this nonsense. It looks like meshtastic goes out of their way to design things so you're obviously spending more time and money for no real benefit over starting with MURS walkie talkies, so if you don't have the time and money to give enough MURS units to homeless people in some city to start developing a network that way, you're obviously far from having the time and money to get anywhere good with meshtastic.

I guess it might be easier to get long-range contacts on these things than MURS. Still giving it a tiny bit of consideration.

Completely different use case. You're comparing apples to oranges and you're smart enough to know this. Quit complaining.

The use case is to develop a decentralized network

What's so different?
