Signet is the real testnet

Im not a huge fan. It's hard to get coins for it. There's no mining, so it doesnt really simulate bitcoin or any of the block time dynamics. I think it's useful for certain things (if you can get coins), but for working with bitcoin consensus, testnet is really much closer to mainnet.

In signet, you make your own coins, right?

You can, if you set it up as federation. But in the regular signet that is already done.

Maybe we are talking about different things. I’m referring to the network you spin up yourself, and make coins with a command line invocation.

Regtest. But you can do it with signet too. There's also an official signet.

Regtest then. Whatever Polar spins up.

An important thing in testnet is that you can test how mining works, and how mining can be attacked and defended. You can do things like reorgs. You can defend against reorgs. You can similate what bitcoin will look like in 10 years, and see what the attack vectors are. You can distribute the coins fairly via proof of work, and so on. Lots can be explored that you cant with signet.
