They wouldn't need to.

Taking possession means they have to hold it.

Think if I had a shiny new coin in my hand and you wanted to take it then either your or your proxy would have to hold it even temporarily.

I am intentionally being overly literal on definitions and processes

Taking possession does not mean they need to own it, which is what "hold" typically means.
