The jester originates from the shaman. That is why they are often depicted wearing two colors (a symbol that they are standing between two worlds). As an advisor, giving bad news can be lethal, so giving it as a joke might be safer, eh?

Later, the jester is depicted as a buffoon that says what everyone is thinking, and less of an advisor with supernatural talents.
