10k sats per month for a single relay that doesn't do anything special? Lol, no. Gonna disconnect rn actually, ahead of 14 day expiration.

nostr.wine seems overly expensive for no reason
I’m afraid you’re both confused and spreading incorrect information. nostr.wine hasn’t changed in any way. Filter.nostr.wine (as it says clearly in the DM) has moved to a monthly subscription. Filter is absolutely not a “normal” relay and has substantial costs. You can learn more about it here: https://docs.nostr.wine/filter/readme
thank you for the clarification
nevertheless, the entry fee to nostr.wine is currently 18888 sats, way more than any other relay. is there a reason for this?
It’s not “way more” than any other relay. It includes a month of filter.nostr.wine, we have 4 geo balanced regional mirrors, we are on default lists for most large clients so we have large free read costs, and we are the highest performance large private relay.
If you don’t think it’s worth it, there is absolutely no obligation to pay. But is isn’t remotely overpriced or “expensive”. We are nowhere close to recouping our financial investment in nostr and that doesn’t even begin to compensate our 100s of hours of development on our relays.
Yeah, I get that it may be reasonable pricing, especially factoring in engineering time. My thinking is a "top notch" relay (whatever that means) when there are over 5 million DAUs on Nostr, will end up costing less. Just a guess, I don't really know what the server costs are like (but those will come down too -- AWS is expensive).
my mistake, didn't know nostr.wine was so well maintained
but, does it make sense from a user experience perspective to have one giant well maintained relay instead of 10 smaller ones?
Each user needs to answer that question for themselves. I use only nostr.wine + filter.nostr.wine (and recently added our new *free* welcome.nostr.wine relay). This works because filter is also reading and broadcasting to several large relays. I have the equivalent reach and content of someone reading from 15+ relays while only reading from 3.
Whether this is valuable to others is a personal choice. Some benefits I’ve seen are much faster client performance, less mobile data use, and less battery use.
good points
have some sats ⚡
Ah, got it. Boosting this so people can see the correction that it is only the *filter*, not the regular relay. Will reconnect to nostr.wine then.

It's not a single relay, it aggregates multiple relays to a fast and reliant single connection, and also filters spam from them. So it saves the user mobile data, battery and provides a better ux
I like my job to pay that ...
