What is the idea behind always-on display on smartphones?

Not sure about other smartphones, but on iphone, it just goes to the screen with wallpaper, time and widgets. So it’s not like it just stays where you are in your activities. That, I would understand.

The point is that instead of the black (turned off) screen, you always see the time, widgets and notifications. Which I find distracting.

Oh yeah now that I don’t understand. Mine doesn’t do this and I’m glad πŸ˜…

If I remember correctly always-on displays were one of the features of OLED/AMOLED. OLED allowed software to only turn on the necessary pixels compares to the traditional panels that had to turn everything on at a time.
