Not sure about other smartphones, but on iphone, it just goes to the screen with wallpaper, time and widgets. So itβs not like it just stays where you are in your activities. That, I would understand.
π€ I have an iPhone and Iβm not sure Iβve experienced what youβre talking about. My screen just stays on whatever I left it on.

The point is that instead of the black (turned off) screen, you always see the time, widgets and notifications. Which I find distracting.
Oh yeah now that I donβt understand. Mine doesnβt do this and Iβm glad π
If I remember correctly always-on displays were one of the features of OLED/AMOLED. OLED allowed software to only turn on the necessary pixels compares to the traditional panels that had to turn everything on at a time.
