Let me raise the stakes. I will zap ⚡️ 100k sats for a really excellent answer with plenty of details.

Reminder: it's simple SELF-CUSTODY that I'm interested in. There's already plenty of good spending tech and custodial apps with good UX.

I don't see many easy to use, secure self-custody solutions that I could recommend to an 80 year old (or a 5 yo).

Wearable BIP39s.

Silver/Gold rings with the words engraved into them, a small NFC inside.

NFC rings would definitely make good spending wallets.

Not so sure about savings... you don't want to be wearing your self-custody long term store of value...

But definitely love the ring idea

I like the idea of an offline coldcard-esque device that’s designed to look like a vault or safe, with a physical alphanumeric keypad inside the safe for entry of passphrases/PIN. It’s a familiar form factor that reinforces the value of the contents and the need to keep it safe and private, and would be easy to keep track of at home since it’s larger in size that the typical hardware wallet. A companion mobile app would display a watch only wallet to view balance create receive addresses for depositing more funds into the vault, or withdrawing from the vault to a spending wallet (hot wallet) accessible in the same app UI.

I like they way you are thinking...

💜🫡 I think the familiarity part is crucial. Another option could be a hardware wallet that’s simply designed as a small laptop computer, or a tablet with a touch screen. The device itself should not be capable of direct internet connection. It should have a camera, and a companion mobile app for monitoring balances and broadcasting any transactions. All communication between the device and the companion app should take place via QR codes scanned with each device’s camera. These are all increasingly familiar UI elements in today’s world, and something most people are either already familiar with or could learn easily.

How about instead of a tablet device a literal metal tablet with the QR code engraved in front (and 12 words on the back with a covering).

That way it's guaranteed to be 100% offline.

The mobile app is probably good enough for a spending wallet for now... but I'm sure in 10 years things will change a lot. Wearable tech, VR/AR will progress. There will be something better and more intuitive.

The simplicity of that idea is nice, as well as being a sturdy physical object.
