Are there any proposals to compress the data? There ought to be a compressed version of all the data transfer that's much smaller and caches better.

RIP to your monthly data allotment if you start using Nostr regularly when away from wifi.
Maybe something like what Gossip client does? Is that what you mean Jimmy?

Part of the reason is because events are usually sent to clients multiple times, e.g if you subscribe to 10 relays and they all have the same event you're going to be sent the same event 10 times.
Data consumption could be reduced significantly with some relay and subscription optimization such as what #[2] discusses in NIP-65.
