I had a classmate who's parents had immigrated from Hong Kong. He had a thing called a Super Wild Card for his SNES that let you play pirated games from floppy disks. Shit was amazing.

Nice. I remember discovering ROMs via torrents in middle school and feeling like an absolute chad playing any game I wanted anytime.

I miss the ZSNES days.

remember xbox 1.0 modchips?

Yes, I had one. I was quite involved in the softmod scene too, making how-to guides and software packs to make it easy for others. I modded ~400 OG Xbox myself, didn't work a real job for a year or two thanks to the money earned πŸ˜…

Always learning new fun shit about your Ryan. Neat.

At $200 a pop it kept the bills paid πŸ˜—πŸ‘Œ

Sick! That’s awesome.

It was yeah. That was a lot of money back then too. Unfortunately wasted by youthful indiscretion πŸ˜‚

Many such cases πŸ˜‚

It's also why I initially learned about Linux. Some tools needed it, and you could turn an Xbox into a capable file server for media.

In 2002 my house had a central server to store torrents, and you could watch them on any TV in the house through XBMC on modded Xboxes. I was already living in the future.

we come from the same blood

do you remember suprnova the torrent site

and #xbins usenet

Xbins was a must have.

Must be nice. Today I learned what an outbox relay is.

I put team xecuter chips in 4 xbox's

i was one of the early users of xbmc kodi, halo 1 via xbconnect, halo 2 was leaked to the scene before it came out

good days

I wish I had nostr as a kid

It was called IRC back then.

What is that?

Internet Relay Chat

Idk what that is either lol

Something with more users than Nostr πŸ˜‚

mIRC was awesome.

Still is! nostr:nprofile1qqs8eseg5zxak2hal8umuaa7laxgxjyll9uhyxp86c522shn9gj8crspz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgjwaehxw309ahx7um5wgerztnrdakj7qgkwaehxw309a3x2an09ehx7um5wgcjucm0d5hsvlnggv has an IRC server running with Nostr identity login.

That emulator was sick

I remember finding roms too and going back to beat super mario world for the first time haha I was just always paranoid about getting in trouble for it like I was on limewire πŸ˜‚

That sounds amazing πŸ‘€

Omg I had a friend that got a PS1 from his japanese friend with something like that on it too. He had so many games but most were in japanese.

PS1 was the first chipped system I owned personally. Every console I've had since has been moddable, it's a requirement for purchase πŸ˜‚

Which systems can be chipped today?

I haven't followed it as closely in years. Last I did was my Switch, bought one as soon as a bootloader exploit was announced. There is stuff for the PS4 & 5, but it's such a cat and mouse game now with online functions and updates. I game on PC now, and mostly use the Switch to stream it to my TV πŸ˜‚

There is cool stuff to totally unlock the PS3 & x360 though.

I gotta jailbreak my switch but im lazy. Wish I could pay you to do it haha

I had an online business in my early teens and sold games and consoles. Had a supplier in Cali that exclusively sold Japanese imports. Somehow scored a relationship with them and was one of the only online sites in North America to publicly sell modded GameCubes through an English-only site. Had a little switch on the back so you could play between NTSC and PAL. Fun times. The GC was such an underrated console at its time imo.

Gamecube is top 2 ninentdo consoles of all time. How were you able to sell those modded systems online? I feel like fbi would be on your ass about it haha

Dunno. Just did lmao. Never got into trouble. Maybe it was some legal loophole by the wholesaler πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ah, the memories…
