Using Alby Hub won't guarantee that you have payment reliability since that is related to your channels you maintain on your Alby Hub node.

Makes sense. So by that same logic, it wasn’t blue’s custodial LN wallet that was the problem; it was their node?

Both were an issue.
Custodial structure made you reliant on their infrastructure and their node was unable to pay due to either their infrastructure, liquidity, visibility, or some other restriction they created on their infrastructure.
