I wouldn't say ruin, just that he didn't have the foresight to see what problems can arise with it. Its the same situation with Core right now and OP_Return. I don't like him, but he adds diversity to clients which helps the network. He just needs to have his ego in check.

core and luke already ruined bitcoin and you could have just fired them in 2017 and you completely blew it and listened to a bunch of lying podcasters and reddit mods instead of using your own brain
I'm cool with it as long as they pay for the Blockspace. Also people did make their choices and it has made Bitcoin successful as a network. Its way better than Bcash that is hardly being used.
Now it comes to Node operators to come together and make a choice on what to run.
