There is a concept that pops into my head often. I think about times when a stream collapses, like influencers or full-time YouTubers, or Canonical or Red-Hat or Redis or Wordpress, now GitHub - share how terrible a decision might be that will affect the business or community they built on, what at one point, was considered "extra" or not guaranteed source of contributions. I understand I mixed platforms and "OSS" foundations/communities, and yes I recognize they have different circumstances, but my argument still applies.

For example, if GitHub or similar goes away, as a contribution, social media, and CI platform. That's going to be sad for the projects and communities that aren't sustainable without big tech. Some projects run their entire business on platform like GitHub without any extra rights/guarantees.

But I think the point I've always wanted to get across is that realizing where the products/industry is propped up on unsustainable contributions. YouTube, GitHub, WordPress, TikTok, Redis can go away at any time and have no duty to sustain your income or project. They may have provided the opportunity but they did not offer you a contract.

I just think it's important to remember that as a business owner/builder. It doesn't mean you don't seize the opportunity, just know what you're building on, and who can take that away from you, and that their may not be anyone to save you.

I think I'm invoking a personal responsibility stance. Which reminds me that no one really wants to do that, so I would also like to remind others that it's unlikely that platforms will collapse entirely without someone filling the vacuum, but it's likely to become more enshitified.
