The Argentinian government has actually tried to do this, which is why there's the "official exchange rate" of the peso and the "blue" rate (which at the moment is roughly double). FUBAR doesn't begin to describe what the Central Bank and corrupt politicians have done to the currency, hence Javier Milei's popularity in saying he will abolish the Banco Central de Argentina.
