I being told that as a regular user I cannot block other users. (also that doing so violates free speech (which is fucking obnoxious and extremely untrue bullshit))

I'm also being told that owners of relays can block people.

This is a shite protocol. If users need to study IT for years to be able to block an asshole on a social media site, then that site is useless garbage.

Mastodon lets users block other users. This is a very doable feature. Nostr fans need to admit that Nostr is and will be crap until this one basic feature is implemented and easily accessible to all.

To be clear, blocking from “display in your timeline” is not the same as blocking from “consuming your content”.

On Nostr, to block someone from consuming your authored content would require you to post it in a private context. This can be a private relay, an encrypted DM, or a private encrypted group (nips for this are being developed). Either of which “you” can own or manage (this will get better).

To your point, this is not the same as “blocking” an individual from consuming your otherwise public content. Nostr prolly won’t ever have that feature.

Personally, if tools for creating private contexts in nostr are improved, I don’t actually see a problem with public content being public for ALL. If you don’t want to post publicly for “all” then post privately for “some”.

Nostr is not the platform for “selective public” publication. And that is OK.
