Good morning nostr, and happy friday. We might go visit the resale shop today, after getting the animal feedings done. And we need to start looking for another male rabbit soon, to have as a breeder. Seems like our rabbits have finally fallen victim to predation of some kind. Anyway, always alot to do around here. Yall have a great day, enjoy your coffee, and remrmber that today is a gift. #coffeechain #grownostr #homesteading

Morning Maria🐰
We also are looking for a male rabbit. Our current buck is quite old. We are moving to silver fox only. Right now the male is a golden palomino
I think ours was a california mix, but we're not too picky about the breed. They are utilitarian to us. We have some friends that raise them too, so may get one of theirs.
When I got my rabbits, I picked giant chinchilla because they were pretty productive, but much cuter than the Californians and New Zealand.
I am so stupid. You don't want cute and friendly when you plan for them to be your food. We already have one of the babies that became a pet because we got busy and didn't butcher her soon enough and she is now the sweetest of the bunch and neither of us wants to kill her.
they aren't the best food, fat-wise anyway
it would be better to let them get to old age and just eat them after God does His thing maybe
idk about rabbits but for sure cows have more fat on them when they are older, and they aren't as cute when they are older
rabbits are very doey little critters, and hardly have a violent bone in their body, that's why they breed so much and live in holes
at some point if you aren't gonna raise them for food you are gonna have to either give them away or kill them
really, all the ruminants (i count rabbits as ruminants except they eat their poop instead of burping it up before a second round) are lovable critters, and most of the varieties you are gonna find on the market are completely docile, sweet, and adorable
killing a rabbit is easy, just twist its neck and done, they feel a brief flash of pain and then they are off in Rabbit Heaven
probably it's best to let the boys do it though, girls are bad at killing
I always let my husband do the deed, but then I do the majority of the butchering.
The one thing the rabbits are very good at doing is producing wonderful fertilizer for the garden. They are worth keeping just for that. Theoretically, we'll be breeding them again soon, but I keep staying so busy that I keep putting it off, because they need some extra tending at birth and the first 2 weeks or so.
they are pretty good barbecued though, even still, or stewed
plus their furs are nice, even common, plain types have quite soft fur that you can stitch together some nice trims on stuff... i met this girl once who had spent a year out in the wilds and i guess she was snaring wild ones, they are common in australia, and made herself a bunch of nice things, fuzzy bracers, trimmings on a sheepskin jacket... even some you can actually shear them and keep them until they are much older and fine for being a pet
Have an awesome Friday, Maria!
GM sorry about the rabbits
