So recently I made a comment about some music (specifically Country) being overly formulaic. Understand I like country including a lot of modern versions of it along with the song in that older note. However the formula comment isn't just about there being only so many keys to work with and beat combinations.

Nashville went corporate and formula and long ago. Much of what is produced today is well written (lyrics) but so formulaic there is almost no difference in the composition.

This video by Sir-Mash-Alot should make clear what I mean, I defy anyone to do with say 6 songs form say Johnny Cash, Merl Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and Glen Campbell. And no cheating with duets some of them did.

Let me explain what I mean by formula

isn't this just what every mashup from every genre proves though? country isn't the only place it happens.

formulaic manufactured hits have been rampant in pop music for over 20 years for example.

Isn't there like two European dudes that wrote like 95% of modern pop?

Your point stands alone, as does Jack's.

He's articulating to avoid confusion.

Oh it ain’t specific to country.

Point. Match. Set.

Wow. A mashup is worth 1,000 words in articulating your distinction.

This is NOT "most modern music uses the pentatonic scale," this is "if AI wrote an entire list of top 40 songs for an entire genre."

You just listed the artists that I stillmally listen to. My sons love everything from that era of "country". In the 80's, beginning with the no-talent soft-rock Kenny Rogers, corporate nashville ruined country. So yes, I agree with the intent behind the word formulaic, but I think its not so much a problem with the formula but with marketing companies getting control over music.

Yup, this sounds about right.

This video is another example of the phenomenon: https://youtu.be/uVdkAyBBPkQ

Even though this post is serious, it gives me an excellent to pull this meme out of the stash.

Classic 1-4-5 chord progression in the key of Cmaj. that underlies most rock/pop/blues/country music made in the last 50 years. If you can play those 3 chords you can play most mainstream music.
