I find it interesting how borders as we know today are a new concept

In 1900 you could pass from one country to another without a passport and be just be fine

The Romans used to protect their borders against other armies, not individuals

But also if you turned up in a village and started raping their women or using up their resources in a selfish manner, you'd have been executed promptly by the locals.
