> Will AI Tilt the Balance of Power?

> The threat of AI should be assessed, therefore, in terms of the potential impact it can have on the uncertain balance of power between state and society, or to express it more sociologically, between the ruling minority and the ruled majority. This relationship depends on who benefits most from new instruments of power, such as the printing press, modern banking, television, internet, social media, and artificial intelligence. In some cases, the state used these tools to enhance its control, but some of them may empower society. For instance, television was a medium that arguably strengthened the position of the ruling minority, while social media is currently enhancing the majority’s political influence at the expense of the ruling minority. The same question, therefore, concerns AI: will AI empower the state at the expense of society, or vice versa?

very thought provoking.

I think that AI will empower the state. Just look at Palantir and how EU will strengthen their hold on AI and how it’s used.

In Norway the government founded companies are encouraged to use 80% AI, whatever that means. In reality that pushes our public sector to use US companies such as Copilot or ChatGPT, sending all our data out of our sovereignty and control.

AI will also be used in propaganda, we are now in the situation that it is impossible to verify if a content is AI generated or not. Images, videos and bots will be extensively used to alter the public perception of current events.

Interesting question. My take is that AI will empower the ruling minority. Unlike social media, AI is very resource intensive. These resources are concentrated with the few. I think it is a matter of time before AI is weaponized as tool of control, but hopefully I am wrong.
