Just finished harvesting the bulk of the remaining taro in my vegetable beds. They grew well in the vege beds but they also shaded out my peppers & herbs.

4kg of starchy roots from 3 plants & their pups is a decent yield in my mind. They took zero effort or maintenance.

I've got about 40-50 small bulbs to plant out for next year. These will go into the wet boggy area of my garden that is too wet for anything else. I now know that I can just harvest them as required & let the others grow out.

Having a reliable, easy source of starch makes me feel very resilient against future supply disruptions.

I like it. Gonna look these up and give them a go

They like the heat.

They're ideally suited to the tropics & sub tropics (where you can't grow potatoes).

Damn. I’m in 4a. Guess I’ll stick to wild cattails

I haven’t yet. But the natives used the roots for flower. Moose up here will scratch up the roots and feast

The taro and coconut fudge from the lū'au was so good!! So cool that you can have it whenever you want

I'll have to look that recipe up.

I did notice it in you pic.

I will ask my friend if she can get one from a lady in her hālau hula 🤙

Awesome!

Thank you boh

Nice! Can you grow yucca where you are? Incredibly easy to grow in my area, but yields significantly more than taro.

Do you mean yuca as in cassava/manioc/tapioca? Yucca is something else here.

Yeah I have about 20 or so plants growing. I planted them mainly as a support species for my fruit trees but then I realised I'd be disturbing their roots if I harvested the cassava.

They're my other SHTF starch source.

I've only harvested 1 plant so far & it was pretty small. The tubers made a great mash & lovely fries though.

I'm growing them in the drier parts of my plot now. They're equally as low effort as the cassava.

Yes exactly. I always forget about the other one, but cassava is what I'm referring to. Excellent mash if you like that kind of thing.

I love the mash with a thick, rich, meat sauce.

It's a bit too gloopy by itself.

These were staple food in Hawaii. They grow quite well where I live too, I've yet to actually eat them. I think I'll do the same

Yeah big in Hawaii, SE Asia & Polynesia.

They apparently grow like weeds in swampy areas & along creeks.

Great survival food
