I've been on nostr for years (mostly Amethyst) and literally never heard this take.

The Damus dev and his simps like to spread fud about Primal. Been going on for a while.

What is being said that isn’t true? Caching servers break functionality. Primal blocks content. Primal goes down when the rest of the network doesn’t.

It isn’t FUD if it’s true.

Yes? Still waiting.

fwiw I’m a happy user of both Damus and Primal 🤷‍♂️

its really simple and not that contentious: Primal connects to their own "caching" server that does some mysterious filtering/hiding, image-swapping and mysterious post-ordering (promotion of content), rather than reading directly from relays. yes, you CAN supply your own caching server, if you happen to run one or know someone who does. but you CANNOT (yet) simply instruct Primal not to do this and read directly from relays.

Odell has explained as much, though he makes it sound less nefarious than I am here (which tells you how each of us feel about this "feature"). whether you see this as a good or bad thing is a matter of subjective taste, but the facts are the facts.

there is no argument, just preferences.

Yep. It’s all true. Yet the only thing Primal people do is name call and yell FUD. But it’s all happing so it literally isn’t FUD. I don’t fucking get it. such BS.

I appreciate the concise explanation.

I've been using primal for a while and never truly understood the centralization criticisms.

I think Primal provides a great UX and I'm OK with the mystery cache server (for my use case).

A competitive UX often requires some degree of centralization.

Everything is a tradeoff.

Yep exactly. 👍nostr:npub1q6mcr8tlr3l4gus3sfnw6772s7zae6hqncmw5wj27ejud5wcxf7q0nx7d5 said occasionally opening Primal is like visiting "Downtown Nostr", but he typically prefers to be out in the country and villages. I really liked that characterization.

did someone here connect their own cache server to find out what things are stored there?

this is news to me. ty
