Buying outright is retarded
With bitcoin backed borrowing wouldn't I just need to borrow the down payment?
So buying a house is a lot closer than expected.

one reason to buy outright is b/c you have one less bank involved. if you have a mortgage, the bank really owns that property, if you fail to meet your obligations.
I have found the biggest scam of home ownership is the property taxes. Basically paying rent on your own property, lest the government will seize it - and let's be honest, they can seize it without real cause, if they want it bad enough.
If I could redo it, I would look for a big piece of empty land in an area that has low property tax. The undeveloped land will be much cheaper to buy. Then you have that land for future use. The catch is you start getting taxed more when you build a permanent structure.
