To become extremely more selfish would bring me to the norm for society. I grew up very sheltered and our views were very different than society. It blew my mind that people had more than one jacket, more than one pair of footwear. It blew my mind that people wouldn't gladly die to save another person. I spoke with kids my age as I was socialized and I was like why would you not die if it meant saving others? Why would you not volunteer 3x a week a nursing homes? Why would you own more than you can wear?
