You can't actually block other nostr users from being able to see your notes.

Which means thin-skinned bullshitters can't prevent being dunked upon and exposed.

Is there a chance nostr protocol could end up just like SMTP? Only a company can afford to run a server to fight spam and onboard everyone.

Highly likely if the relays use anything other than micropayments or PoW to restrict the use of their scarce resources.

I don’t understand the push for PoW on nostr. Seems like a waste if we can just use lightning paywalls? Plus this way the relays get rewarded

Maybe I’m missing something though?

I dont understand much, Mobile devices cannot do PoW so the job is outsourced to miners for a fee
