Why tf do you need a relay to drive an LED?
A transistor is more than enough
The LED could be replaced with anything. Use your imagination. Here it is being used to show the relay's state.

The problem this solves is that the RPi's 3.3v GPIO is not sufficient to drive this 5v relay. So I'm using a transistor, activated by the GPIO, to give 5v to the relay.
I'm working on a project where I'm using a RPi to turn a large LED strip on/off.
When a NPN transistor recieves current to the base, it allows current flow from the collector to the emitter.
The flyback diode in parallel to the relay protects the GPIO from the discharged EMF when the relay deactivates.
So the resistor and transistor stabilize input into the relay? I just read about this, I don't understand the risk of not having the flyback. The residual voltage would only be fractions of a volt right? No capacitors or anything to hold a charge so what is the danger?
