The 60 Minutes segment about the El Salvador torture prison where deportees from the U.S. are sent was axed by CBS on Sunday because they were instructed not to air it.

The Canadian distributor Global TV released it anyway. It was available for two hours, before it broke loose on the internet, and now it’s everywhere. Whoops!

I spent the last two summers in El Salvador while my son was attending an immersion language school.

I spoke with locals as much as I possibly could and was fascinated to hear their perspective on Bukele.

One particular guide I spent two days with (any national parks there, you MUST be accompanied by a certified tour guide).

He was ex military and seemed rather liberal based on his opinions on same sex/trans rights etc.

—Anyway, he was active during the 2020 gang roundups.

His opinion was similar to every one of the people I spoke to.

They all love the fact that, the country went from a war torn 3rd world shithole to one of the safest in the world.

There’s virtually zero crime there.

Bukele’s approval rating is listed at ~90%

I even spoke to a surf instructor dude that spent some time in jail just last year because of his relationship with a woman who’s brother was a gang member.

Even he said, he’d never trade back to the previous system. He now loves his country.

I understand why it’s a lot better for the people who live there. When it comes to somewhere I might want to move to though, that prison is a huge honey pot and it was all accomplished by a massive centralization of power, so I still find it to be concerning. Other countries down there have experienced massive prison breaks leading to violence and social unrest, like Ecuador a few years ago. I also work with a Salvadoran guy right now who told me he has multiple friends in prison who are definitely not affiliated with any gang activities and are innocent of any crime, but just got rounded up anyway with no recourse, no visitors allowed and nobody knows if they’ll ever be set free. But, I was in El Salvador for a month many years ago when it was the most dangerous country in Latin America, and I get why nobody would want to trade it back for that.

Totally agree with everything you said.

A lot of people got rounded up for just being affiliated with gang members or having family members involved. I heard this first hand from people. If you even know a gang member and you didn’t turn them in, you get the same treatment.

Its harsh.

There was a Chinese businessman I met on that trip that told me a lot of countries do it this way. He said Americans are so dumb, they think everywhere is like the USA. He said we have it too easy and we’re spoiled.

They use American dollars there.

Funny story, so I rented a car and drove to the Santa Ana Volcano area and decided to stop at this little restaurant on a cliff overlooking Coatepeque lake (which is fucking amazing btw) when I went to pay, all I had was a credit card and they didn’t accept cards. I was about to leave, and the teenager working in the kitchen stopped me said he could accept bitcoin i used it.

After that, I asked everyone if i could pay with bitcoin and the funny part is that EVERYONE said no. Unless I insisted Lol.

Nobody really uses or understands it.

El Zonte is different. There’s bitcoin signs everywhere and about half of the places I asked accepted it.

I became pretty good friends with this one Airbnb hosts and he kept saying he lost a bunch of money so he didn’t do it anymore.

I asked him when he bought some and he said it was like 55k…

I was perplexed and said why did you sell it, its over 110k???

He didn’t understand.

Its so weird how older people are so oblivious to the concept of btc. Nice guy but just oblivious.

Anyway, bring cash and before you pay in btc, make sure they have a lightning wallet.

It gets old trying to pay $4-5 on chain and upping the fees to speed it up.

They can deal with their own criminals as they see fit. Even in that case, I don’t think it’s right to give them subhuman treatment. But sending nonviolent people who were grabbed off of American streets to this hellhole for missing some paperwork is completely unacceptable.

I can't imagine why we'd send Venezuelans to El Salvador whether they're criminals or not.

Your claim they were non violent is up for debate and I don't think you or I are knowledgable enough of their past to weigh in.

All we really know is what the news has told us.
