Honest question, is there a difference between dying for things you say; vs dying to physically protect yourself or those who are being forcefully oppressed from having a voice?

Probably since the beginning of mankind, there has been a psycho somewhere willing to kill somebody just because they are “different”.

Meaning, to the original post, could it not be said that everyone who dies, say in a war, both sides, are dying to protect “freedom of speech”.

Freedom and free speech are inextricably connected

I get that, even though both of those do not mean freedom from consequence.

However, my question is better put; how does one determine if someone dies for protecting freedom of speech or because of freedom of speech?
