I tend to think the majority cause is kids who aren't successful at anything and/or aren't unconditionally loved by their families, doing what gets them attention and praise. I would also believe that chemicals could make a person more susceptible, though.

It'll be interesting to see more research come out on this. They go through a pretty extensive list of substances, not just pesticides, that disrupt sex hormones. It seems like a lot of synthetic estrogens have been introduced to our environments in the past few decades.

The susceptibility point seems important, because cultures that still emphasize sex differences don't seem to have the same trends of trans identification, although they presumably do have the same physiological trends like lower male testosterone.

The chemicals absolutely interfere with health, especially male health.

I've commented that my eldest son, who is an intellectual, not an athlete, so does very limited exercise, is much stronger than me even though I exercise a lot daily. I've commented that I can't compete with youth and testosterone. When the males have reduced testosterone they are weaker physically, but also mentally. They seem to have less of the protective instinct. Those in power definitely like that trend.
