I for one welcome “armchair expert” chatter because it helps people get into subjects they would otherwise not look into.

Of course it’s silly to think you can make concrete informed statements based on a little bit of research, ignoring all of the nuance that an “expert” might be familiar with. But, you can stay humble and use the opportunity to broaden your world knowledge.

It’s nice to have a newbie point of view on hot button issues that get people emotional. You have an opportunity to see things from various angles as an outside observer.

The experts are experts because they dedicated time to the issue so it should be encouraged to spend time on things you’re interested in.

Yeah, maybe don’t take the “I now know it all” stance but certainly don’t be afraid to speak up if something seems like an approved and accepted narrative.

Legitimate experts who discourage this kind of exploration on the part of the layperson are dangerous. Siloing and gatekeeping of information by an expert class opens the door wide to tyranny.
