Is Sparrow Wallet an acceptable method of self-custody? I only have a small amount, and it’s sitting on strike right now. But as it reaches large enough chunks, I would like to move it into something I controlled directly. I’m not sure if the ledger is the right way to go about that because if it breaks, then I have to spend $100 to replace it. But Sparrow can just be on my laptop.

Blockstream jade is better than a ledger. Both work with Sparrow.
Thank you will looking it up :)
Regardless you should have your seed words backed up elsewhere so if the device breaks you can put the words in on a new device, they're all bip-39 compatible
Dont generate your keys on your laptop. Do that part offline, on the hardware wallet.
BitKey might be better as it is 2 of 3 multisig with recovery
