They're trying to have a dust bath. A dust bath is how they keep away mites. If there's a good sandy/dusty area for them to roll in, you can also sprinkle some diatomaceous earth in that area to help them prevent mites.

Interesting they pick a grassy area when I already gave them a bare sand-filled spot to do that. Guess they don’t like my gesture. 🤣
