I have heard it said that there are some people in the world who believe that if you don't respect their authority, they don't have to respect you as a person.
That tends to be most accurate when dealing with university professors & govt employees.

Respect me because I have a title? That’s not strength... it’s the desperation of someone begging for validation. True strength doesn’t ask for respect. It makes respect irrelevant.
Respect is earned. If you don't respect the institution that granted that person's authority, perhaps they should demonstrate to you why it deserves your respect
In my experience, a significant portion of the people working for said institutions only joined in an effort to acquire some level of respect that they could never have obtained on their own. It is unfortunate that so many people are or have been fooled by such things.
