Running Linux 🙌🏼 :D

Been an avid MacOS user for over a decade but could not stick around for 'Apple Intelligence' and relentless surveillance tech. This is such an exciting and welcome change to #FOSS. Just the initial install not having a bunch of bloat apps you can't uninstall is so 😘👌🏼

Feels empowering ⚡️✨

Nice! What setup did you go with?

Thanks! I wanted stability and no bloat more than anything so I went with Debian (turns out they just released version 13 so it was perfect timing :) and an interface like Mac so I chose Gnome. It's been great so far, really liking it

There are so many distros out there, I figured 'the best' is probably just based on personal preferences and needs. What are you using and why did you make that choice?

That moment that clicked when I realized Linux was decentralized just like Bitcoin. Awesome to hear this!!!

Star Labs has some really nice machines when you want to get even further away from surveillance tech, and they accept Bitcoin. Machines running Coreboot or Libreboot have an open source BIOS and disable Intel Management Engine which is essentially a black box that has root access to most of the computer. AMD has an equivalent. Some older models of Thinkpads can be flashed to replace the stock BIOS with Libreboot like an X230 or T480 or T480S. Open source secure, air gapped signer and network connected broadcaster?

Protectli makes Coreboot based routers, I think they would also make excellent nodes if you got one for that purpose. I wish they accepted Bitcoin.

On a Google Pixel you can run GrapheneOS, a security and privacy minded open source mobile OS that DeGoogles the Google device, mine comes today!

Sorry for the info dump but I get excited when I see someone discover privacy/security/decentralized/open source tech. You may know all or some of this or if not, some neat things to check out!

As a 10.5 year employee of Apple, I still love Apple, but I love freedom more.

I'm not giving up on Apple though. 😉

Love this, thanks for sharing! Same, saw the parallels with Bitcoin, it just perfectly fits the values. I guess once you go down the freedom tech rabbit hole there is no going back lol It just takes some time to switch over but I'm really enjoying the process. Didn't know about the BIOS vulnerability or Libreboot, I will look into it though since I also got an old T480 :D These machines are so amazing and cheap right now. I'd like to upgrade it, install Linux, and test running a local LLM for fun. Ah congrats for moving to Graphene! I switched over last November, no regrets at all 🙏🏼 I've had no issues with it and really appreciate that it has so many useful features. Feel free if you have questions ✨

I think we need to also take a look at our hardware. The chips themselves have back doors. Need to find ways to opt out of that as well.
