The problem is that email has centralized into a half dozen large receivers that handle 99% of email, so no, if you want your email delivered, you have to play by the rules imposed by the few large receivers. You can permissionlessly run your own mail server to receive for yourself, but you won't be able to send to anyone without DKIM.

Same could very well happen for Nostr, especially with the corporate/VC/OpenSats capture. It’ll take time but it could very well become quasi-permissionless like e-mail.
