2025 gaming feels like a trade-off between clarity and control for “cinematic mush.” Anti-aliasing and upscalers blur the image, and render scales are dropped only to be artificially upscaled again. Thirty frames per second is sold as “filmic,” but it plays like DOOM 1 in VGA on a 486. Motion blur, depth of field, and film grain are used to hide the fact that native clarity is gone.

Back in the 90s and 2000s, hardware limitations forced games to be sharp, responsive, and playable. Today, our GPUs can draw billions of triangles, yet we ghost along at 30 FPS chasing photo-realism. The reality is simple: I’d take clean 1080p at 120 FPS (hell, even 60 FPS) over fake 4K with blur and ghosting any day.

All that motion blur, Nvidia's DLSS, AMD's FSR3, UE5's Lumen, TAA and TSR anti-aliasing. It's all garbage. Stop chasing screenshots and start making games feel alive again.

This hits hard. Taking shortcuts everywhere.

yeah and gamers are noticing it and they're not impressed.

yes!

It's insane. Why would anyone spend several K on a gaming rig only to then render the textures at 66% with one of the AI upscaling techniques? Don't even get me starte on Unreal Engines Lumen. We should just go back to bake shadows into textures because the new techniques are just laziness at the cost of quality.

The problem is most people prefer the fake 4k with blur and ghosting.

Fun fact, I generally watch movies on Netflix and co in 720p instead of 1080. At my age (and from the couch) I don't really see any difference and they stream better. But I do notice when characters (or other moving stuff) pull a ghost trail behind them or when everything 50 metres in front of me is blurry because, you know, "depth of field" is so cool!

It makes no sense.

You can write an ballade about things that don't make sense nowadays.

yes

Sounds like you can use some black mesa (blue shift mod) or QCDE in your life right now.

🤔 I'll have to look those up.

For now I'm gonna stick with RDR2 (again) and some other games from like 10 years ago. They're more beautiful and run better than most new games.

Black mesa is a remake of Half-Life 1 and the entire half life series is a must play if you haven't. Blue shift is a remake of the Half-Life Blue Shift expansion. But with professional voice acting and mocap so its really cool just like the original black mesa.

QCDE is Quake Champions Doom Edition, literally a Doom 2 mod which can be run for free with freedoom.

Its gonna be right up your alley if you want things old school.
