I noticed that Italians and French are generally pretty lean (they look healthy at least) even though they eat insane amounts of sweets and carbs in general (pasta, bread, etc)

How are they not obese?

And does being lean equals being healthy?

Are there any long term studies of their diet/lifestyle?

1. They eat much smaller portions of carby foods

2. Being obese in IT/FR is severely frowned upon

3. High rates of smoking in both countries
