Even though there are tropes about lawyers, the truth is that the practice of law in the united states is fundamentally broken, is full of justice deranging incentives, and impractically expensive for 90% of those who need lawyers. Most lawyers don't know what they are doing and Judges often rule on matters for the result they want not what the law requires because they know an appeal is unlikely. Some of these things are more controversial than others.
