#asknostr Would #nostr exist without #bitcoin? Would it exist but be built on more slowly? Or does it have nothing to do with bitcoin?

To me, nostr development is dependent on the incentives that are inherent to denominating and earning in SATs.

What do you think?

Nostr and Bitcoin don't need one another, but the two have a beautiful symbiotic relationship together. They would be successful separately.

That makes sense to me.

Nostr depends on bitcoiners not Bitcoin, unfortunately. We need more variety of content, views and discussions around here.

Nostr without zaps would see far slower adoption.

I agree. I feel like the v4v is a key to adoption.

I don’t think Nostr is dependent on Bitcoin but I think it enhances Nostr and I don’t think Nostr would exist without Bitcoin showing the value in a decentralized path.

When I first joined nostr two years ago, I initially thought it was part of bitcoin, maybe as a sidechain. That's how conjoined they seemed. Notice the "nostr us nit section of this wiki page: http://nostrwiki.crrdlx.infinityfreeapp.com/doku.php?id=wiki:what-is-nostr

Hypothetically it could have existed but I think without Bitcoin the probability it would have existed is lower.

Some events have precursors that cause them to happen.

Just really depends on what inspired Nostr to exist to begin with.

Seems likely that there is a connection of inspiration from bitcoin..

To be fair most, if not all of the technologies in Bitcoin existed prior to Bitcoin, or outside of Bitcoin.

So from a technology standpoint hypothetically Nostr could have existed with Bitcoin.

I think where Bitcoin's role plays into Nostr is the community, and funding.

With XLon Musk banning Bitcoiners, and Cryptocurrency people on twitter maybe people like Fiatjaf, and Jack wouldn't have been inspired as much to create a new alternative.

As we see, there are plenty of non-Bitcoin focused alternatives like Gab, Mastodon, PanQuake, etc. but

So it's hard to say, overall history plays out the way it does, and nobody can change the past except The CIA 🙃.

Yeah. It really seems like many good ideas came together at once.

Nostr uses libsecp256k1, a bitcoin library. And nostr was built by bitcoiners. So nostr would not exist without bitcoin.

Now that it does exist, i dont think nostr has any dependency on bitcoin except for that library. Devs build on nostr for all sorts of reasons and some of the better-known devs aren't even into bitcoin ( nostr:npub1acg6thl5psv62405rljzkj8spesceyfz2c32udakc2ak0dmvfeyse9p35c )
