Nostr is missing a Napster-like app
Discussion
Now this would really increase adoption
Someone could do it with NIP-94🤷♂️
No it won't, because that niche is solved by bittorrent and you can't do better. Nostr devs are notorious for brushing away "complex" optimizations, so they won't even try to copy bittorrent's efficiency. But even if they do, it is merely reinventing an already very well oiled wheel.
Just cause you can’t do shit doesn’t mean others can’t 🤣
Yeah it would use BitTorrent. I was just referring to the tracking software/index of files. The actual file transfer protocol would be BitTorrent since it’s battle tested and works. Essentially a Nostr based tracker.
Pretty cool that this has been implemented now (nostrudel or dtan.xyz for example), although I’m pretty sure I was mistaking an indexer for a tracker. The next step is now for these sites to setup APIs to allow automated downloads from certain totally legitimate downloaders (for example people wanting to get the latest Linux os). Or better yet implement a nostr client directly in the automated downloaders.
Isn't zapstr.live somewhat a beginning of that?
Does it let you share files with other users?
You can upload anything and you have unique URL's you can share, so if that's what you're asking, I guess yes?
If the files uploaded end up in the same server then it’s not the same. Napster was p2p file sharing if I remember correctly

Yes, that's correct. Napster had a three year meteoric run before they succumbed under a barrage of lawsuits and declared bankruptcy. I doubt any #nostr incarnation would fare better.
