It feels like renting a car is a kind of negative lottery. You have to pick a company and hope they aren’t the one who has messed up and over booked themselves. Last time it was Budget that packed. This time Thrifty. Of course the way they overbook I’m much more likely to be caught in the crowd than not. Sometimes it takes hours. But it’s totally inconsistent which companies will have the problem. Or at least to me.

Why does renting a car take SO LONG? It’s going to take me two to three hours to pick up a rental car.

I would guess it's because they don't really want you to rent anything because they don't make money on the rent, they make money by reselling cars they buy at a discount due to tax subsidies they get when purchasing.

they make money on the gas charge when you don’t fill the tank before you return it

And add ons like insurance and gas.

Isn’t this a location problem rather than a company problem or market problem?

Can fly into most US cities and get the car in about 20 minutes.

It’s genuinely absurd. One of the best experiences I had in recent years was actually at a small company in Costa Rica heading to Nostrica. In and out quickly, super nice people — definitely a different experience than the usual American car rental situations

Yeah we had a great experience in Costa Rica too.

Much more convenient to just steal a car when you get there. Find yourself a nice Kia and all you need is a USB to get it started.

I was pretty lucky last time in London as I booked a small fuel friendly car. When I arrived they said they could not provide the car but had upgraded me to a bigger one at no extra cost. I said that was no good as the fuel would cost me more! So they gave me a tank of fuel free. That worked out well at least!
