Overly simplified, Cashu is one person running a mint, Fedimint is multiple running a mint together.
If you mint ecash at mrecheese Cashu mint, I can just take your sats and disappear.
If you mint ecash at mrecheese fedimint, my friends and I can just take your sats and disappear, after a majority of us agree to do it.
Use a trusted mint either way and you'll be okay. Treat it like custodial lightning and you'll be okay.
Cool stuff:
- You can text somebody an ecash token, it's just a bunch of text.
- Onboarding is simple. Try the nostr:npub1dx5q2el8nd4eh3eg9t2e25fd7zuqg7zxz6ldkc3uzgh66ss2yc6st288sj wallet and I'll DM you some Cashu ecash.
- nostr:npub12rv5lskctqxxs2c8rf2zlzc7xx3qpvzs3w4etgemauy9thegr43sf485vg and nostr:npub1mhcr4j594hsrnen594d7700n2t03n8gdx83zhxzculk6sh9nhwlq7uc226 and nostr:npub1mutnyacc9uc4t5mmxvpprwsauj5p2qxq95v4a9j0jxl8wnkfvuyque23vg are doing things with various ecash implementations.
- npub.cash lets you have a zappable address that uses your npub, or a custom name if you pay for it. You can withdraw to regular lightning or your ecash wallet.
- I think that it can be very private. It seems to break the link between you and whoever sent/received sats.
- Probably a bunch of stuff I'm forgetting...
It's not THE solution, but it is A solution. And it's fun.
