Do you read every book cover to cover?
Discussion
If the book isn't worth reading cover-to-cover, was it ever worth reading at all?
If you read one chapter and it gave you one new idea, wasnโt it worth it already?
Oh, absolutely. But if a book gives me any single idea, I read it all the way through... You never know what other wisdom it may be hiding ๐๐
Itโs an interesting question if a book in whole is more than the sum of its ideas
If it's a textbook, perhaps not. A great author is one that will turn the sum of those ideas into something completely new. Something that will make you think more than any individual drop of information in the bucket of the book's wisdom.
That's why I like analytical essays more than books when it comes to nonfiction ๐ It's a shorter read, but a good author will still come around to that greater point that you were supposed to get from a whole book
For 90% of the books I read, Yes.
I mostly read fantasy.
Yes I do, but I gave up with Cat her in the Rye geeezzz it was sooo boring ๐ด
Read by title printed out, it makes you go into or go away.
Nah.. the other day I picked up a book in a bookstore and started reading the second last chapter of it while walking through town. When I got home I read the last chapter and afterwards started the book from the beginning. Sometimes I just read whatever chapter sounds best, judging by the title
And do you usually finish it?
Ah.. my rule of thumb is to read at least 50 pages of each book that I pick up and then judge it if I like the style/topic. Meaning that, if I do not like the first 50 pages, then I probably will not enjoy the rest of the book. With good books (the ones I enjoy) I usually do not notice the pages slipping through my fingers, and sobIโll always finish an enjoyable book from cover to cover haha ๐ ๐ค
I'd say most ... I only abandon it if I don't connect with the writing about 1/4 in ...
If a book itโs not very interesting or it becomes very repetitive, I start fast reading it, skipping sections etc..
Why waste more time on it haha.
Only books I enjoy
I start portions of many books at a time.
The book must really pull me in for me go cover to cover.
Sounds familiar. Always reading multiple books at a time
No. As Francis Bacon said: "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested."
