"The curriculums use evidence-supported practices, including phonics — which teaches children how to decode letter sounds — and avoid strategies many reading experts say are flawed, like teaching children to use picture clues to guess words" https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/09/nyregion/reading-nyc-schools.html

this is an example of non-parents being teachers. any parent knows that kids cheat when reading by looking at pictures. learning the sounds is a family affair for age 3-5.

practice sounds in the car, grocery store, when on a walk, etc. and then learning to read is a piece of cake for most 4yos.

If you send your kid to school without knowing how to read you’re slacking.

I was reading just fine when I sent my kids to school.

Lol

Sorry. Couldn’t resist. Agree completely though. Parents should be leading the charge.

Our 4 year old can read and write and do addition and subtraction. It’s kind of foreign to me that there are kids that age who can’t.

Don’t send them to school, they’ll progress will slow, I’ve seen it happen.

or "send them with the right mental equipment. "

it is a very difficult position for most families to have a stay at home parent to coordinate with a homeschooling pod

don't go to work without your hard hat

right on. brother 🤙

Just being present and playing solves most of the issues and gives them a huge head start. My biggest annoyance was seeing parents defaulting to screens. For context, mine are in their teens now.

We limit screen’s tremendously in our household. We’re always outside.

Remove the limitations for a few days and I guarantee you’ll see personality changes. And not in a good way.. selfishness, aggression, and disobedience.

agree. family screen time can be good.

isolated screen time is bad

we will all do rosetta stone and duolingo together and also have family bluey time but a parent is always present for the screen time

Reading all these comments makes me wanna do better. Honestly been slacking on the screentime.

If you can win the screen battle.. everything else is easier.
