I totally understand your view...! on the other hand, it gives us a moment to consciously reflect on the past year and we can look at things that went well and things that didn't...And visualize the outcome we wish for the year to come, letting go of stuff that doesn't serve us. It's like a ritual :) Maybe this helps in more depth the menaing of a new beginning even though it's a manmade day...
