FUN FACT: COYOTE DADS ARE FABULOUS FATHERS.

(Unlike some other species)

Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center on Facebook

"This spring, not far from Southwest Wildlife, we rescued a male coyote. Wild and wounded, he had nearly given up. His left front leg was dangling, shattered by a gunshot. He didn’t want to be anywhere near humans, which made him an uncooperative patient. He tore out his IVs and sometimes refused to take his meds or to eat at all. This coyote needed to be with other coyotes. Unfortunately, because of his injuries, the vets decided his leg would have to be amputated and he would be staying at our sanctuary.

Coyotes mate for life and male coyotes are dedicated parents. We decided to try him with Sun, a foster coyote mom, hoping that he would help raise orphaned puppies before their release. He and Sun hit it off just fine, so they were introduced to the first 4 coyote orphans of the season. These coyotes are so wild that we rarely see them without a search. This week a check of all the hiding places revealed a special moment when we discovered our new foster dad with the pups!

Help us welcome Moon, our new coyote foster father. He’s going to be an amazing and wild influence on the little ones. Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!"
