I see a few people running #umbrel.

Yay or nay? I am interested in the easy button for:

-Nextcloud

-Esphome

-home assistant

-pi-hole

Thoughts?

#asknostr #node #homelab

I would not run Nextcloud publicly.

That being said, I'd rather get hacked than making monopolies bigger.

If it's behind a firewall, I'm willing to take that risk.

I’ve enjoyed umbrel

Umbrel is fine, but you should run everything behind https://tailscale.com so you don’t open ports. Also, do not install Bitcoin apps on the same node as file sharing, etc.

Thank you. I'm not sure I am going to run any BTC stuff at this point. Thank you. Are there any other pitfalls to it that a n00b like me might not know at the start?

Well, I personally don’t like running nodes on Raspberry Pi which is what most tutorials will suggest. I like to get my own hardware and install Linux and then do the Umbrel install. If you have never used Linux, that’s probably more than you want to bite off for the first go. Another option is to purchase the hardware from Umbrel and everything will just work.

That said, you are running your own server and therefore you will be responsible for maintaining it. I would suggest setting it up on a virtual machine on a laptop and getting familiar with it. Don’t put in data in it that you’re unwilling to lose. Once you are comfortable, then you can go live with your real data and hardware.

If you need help, just ask. There are many others here who will also help people get started.

I'm familiar with Ubuntu as a daily driver, but not so much as a server.

I'm poking around at various options, but, I do think that getting a NUC or the new umbrel home is just the most sensible way for me to go since I'm not wanting or needing anything with "more" than that for my own purposes.

Thank you. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me in the future.

NUCs are awesome and Umbrel will run great on Ubuntu desktop.

Good to know. Thanks!

I’m a fan. I don’t use it to its full extent. Strictly run my full node and Electrum server. Also gave Public Pool a go.

I don’t host my files on there or anything like that.

Have you ever had any issues with it?

When I first set it up on a Raspberry Pi the SSD shit the bed during setup. That may have just been a faulty SSD. No problems after replacing the SSD.

I picked up the new hardware and it worked great out of the box. No issues whatsoever.

I'm considering running it on a NUC. The new umbrel home looks pretty decent, though.

I don't like raspis. I only own one as a need to run a few things for a 3D printer. I don't really see the point in getting more. I know, I'm strange. (I also don't like most arduinos. 😅🤷‍♂️)

I don’t have any experience with NUC.

I’m not a huge fan of using RaspberryPis either. Arduinos though…those I’m a fan of. Ridiculously easy to prototype on. To each their own

I'm so bad with programming, I've never been about to do anything useful with an arduino... 🫣

Hence asking about umbrel... LOL

No worries and understood. You shouldn’t have any problems with the new umbrel hardware. It truly is plug and play

Cool. I just have to see if the cost is justified for the hardware. It might be.

Just make sure to get a big ssd because you can't upgrade it I heard. Something to do with docker containerss.

Thank you for the advice!

I really should publish my scripts that automatically set up a Nextcloud server...

That might be helpful...
