Let's explore the expression "time and effort" as in "I have put so much time and effort into doing this."

As most of us are well aware of, time is the scarcest resource we have in this life.

But what is effort?

Effort is the energy you can project at a particular point in time.

As you grow older you can project less and less energy into the production of value for others or yourself. That is, the amount of energy you can project monotonically decreases as a function of time.

As a derivative of time, thus, effort/energy is the second scarcest resource you have.

Be kind with your future self (and your heirs) and store that time and energy into something that can hold their spent value forever.

Don't let time thieves steal the most precious resources you have.

This is a great read in the same direction of your post : http://www.paulgraham.com/selfindulgence.html

Yeah, itโ€™s related.

Jeff Booth helped understand this and for that Iโ€™ll be forever grateful.

Just googled him, share with me anything you find useful !

Here is another great read about life generally : https://www.navalmanack.com/

I don't agree with that definition of effort and that as we get older, we can project less and less energy into the production of value.

Hey, so you think that you have the same energy to work when youโ€™re 22 and 82?

So are you only talking about physical strength as energy in this sense?

Iโ€™m talking about your vital energy.

What came to mind when you read what I wrote?

Well, I'm thinking the older we get, the more knowledge and life experience we have, the more wisdom we also have, the more value we can provide.

I agree that those are valuable things. And I donโ€™t discount them.

But if youโ€™re too old youโ€™ll need somebody else energy to put that knowledge and experience into action.

Agree.

I think we weren't talking about the same thing by saying "energy" and "value".

I need to keep thinking about this to find a better word than โ€œvalueโ€.

Thank you for challenging my ideas.
