Getting bitcoin and using bitcoin are two different things and you don't eat where you shit, so don't keep bitcoin on exchanges or wherever you buy your bitcoin.
Preserving your own data? That's a big big big big big topic. Not sure where to start honestly.

It’s not impossible but you have to do the work yourself to discover users and interact with them. If you’re only following 5 people your timeline is going to be pretty empty. You’ll also probably want to add some paid relays which will help you find more people and content.
